Am I Taking My Makeup Off Right?

I know taking off makeup can be annoying so I’m here to help 💝
Makeup can be stubborn.
This year I realized that I’ve been taking my makeup off wrong for years. I’ve always been so busy with life and never had any time for self-care. My go-to was always makeup remover wipes, but I WILL NOT be hating on wipes lol. I still use makeup wipes when I wear very minimal makeup, but the only difference is that I’ve switched to better brands for my skin.
I hope this blog helps clear up any thoughts regarding the famous trio: makeup wipes, micellar water, and cleaning balms.
1) Makeup Wipes
Some people will say that you shouldn’t be using makeup wipes and some will say they only like to use makeup wipes. It’s ultimately up to preference with what you’re comfortable with. The main concern is always your skin health. Using makeup wipes that may damage your skin is where the stigma comes from and why people don’t prefer them. I love makeup wipes because I’m so busy and tired after a long day. I’ve learned that the best wipes for my skin are the:
Simple Micellar Cleansing Wipes or the Round Lab Dokdo Cleansing Wipes
The reason for these choices is because they work best with any skin type especially sensitive skin. I’ve had sensitive skin since I was younger and big name brand makeup wipes have ALWAYS irritated my skin by making me breakout, or have given me a severe rash all over face. I truly believe these wipes will give you the best results without harming your face with toxic chemicals that lead to breakouts.
The Simple Micellar Cleansing Wipes are truly the best of both worlds because the wipes will not damage your skin barrier due to Micellar water assisting in taking off stubborn makeup that sometimes doesn’t come off easily.
With the Round Lab Dokdo Cleansing Wipes, you will be able to remove all your makeup without causing irritation to your face.
Although makeup wipes can be very convenient it can be hard to take off stubborn eye makeup and that’s where micellar water comes to the rescue.
2) Micellar Water
Moving on to my personal favorite micellar water, I have totally transitioned into using micellar water, because of how amazing it is for skin. Micellar water is a skincare product that has gained popularity in recent years for its gentle yet effective cleansing properties. It consists of tiny micelles, which are oil molecules suspended in soft water. These micelles attract dirt, oil, and makeup, effectively removing them from the skin without the need for harsh scrubbing.
Micellar water specifically does not cause me to break out or irritate my skin. I always make sure to buy micellar water that says, “for sensitive skin” and that really helps narrow down my decision-making process. My go-to is the:
Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water or the La Roche-Posay ULTRA Eau Micellaire (both for sensitive skin) 🥰
To use micellar water, you simply soak a cotton pad with the solution and gently swipe it across your face. There's no need to rinse afterward, making it a convenient option for quick cleansing, especially on the go or for those with busy lifestyles.
For the most part, micellar water will be able to remove all your makeup after a night out but sometimes there's nothing better than a face balm that can remove 100% of your makeup. I feel like from my personal experience micellar water is very beneficial for every simple look but I most definitely cleanse my face with a face balm after wearing my makeup for over 8 hours.
Don’t be afraid to try micellar water, you will not be disappointed!
3) Cleansing BALMS
Moving onto one of my favorite topics…cleansing balms.
I know cleansing balms can be confusing because you might think, “what is the difference between cleansing balms and a good face wash?”, I’m going to explain the difference so hopefully it helps you understand a bit more.
Face cleansing balms are skincare products designed to effectively remove makeup, dirt, and impurities from the skin while providing hydration and nourishment. They typically come in a solid, balm-like texture that melts into an oil upon contact with the skin. Face cleansing balms having a melting formula, and when applied to your skin, the balm melts into an oil, allowing it to effectively dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and other impurities. Cleansing balms also promote gentle cleansing of your skin and hydration while you clean your skin.
In order to use a cleansing balm, take a small amount and massage it onto dry skin using gentle circular motions. As the balm melts into an oil, it will effectively dissolve makeup and impurities. Afterward, rinse thoroughly with water or wipe away with a damp cloth. I use a damp cloth and gently pat my face for the best results then apply moisturizer if I have time.
My go-to face cleansing balms are the:
ma:nyo Deep Clear Cleansing Balm or the Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm
I personally love these cleansing balms because afterward my face and pores feel so clean and I see an immediate difference in my skin texture. When choosing a cleansing balm, consider your skin type and any specific concerns you may have. Look for formulas that are free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, and potential irritants. Additionally, some cleansing balms may be formulated with specific skin-beneficial ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or botanical extracts. So, keep this all in mind and when you find THE ONE… you will definitely see the difference after you take off your makeup.
